I wouldn't mind seeing this film again and I'm glad there's an intermission in between as it's something longer films needed.thevoid99https://www.blogger.com/profile/03055459287396592446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21463545.post-18727098083975853672019-07-28T19:04:37.580-07:002019-07-28T19:04:37.580-07:00LOVE this film!! I've seen it many times and while its a grand entertainment at home I'm here to tell ya that it is something that really should be experienced on the big screen.

I've seen it that way twice, once when I was a teen and then about two decades later when I took my nieces and nephew to a remastered showing of the print. There are so many scenes that will knock your socks off (the casualty list makes a huge impact as does the field hospital) and you can really get a sense of what it was like for audiences when the film was initially released.

Yes Scarlett is by turns selfish, spoiled and difficult but she's also a fierce protector of her kin even though her ways are at times warped. But you have to consider that just as she was coming to maturity her world came apart at the seams and she holds fiercely to what's left, had the Civil War not come along she probably would have pined for Ashley for a bit and then grown out of it but as it is he remains a sort of ideal and she has to go through all kinds of hell to finally get her head straight.

So many actresses were considered, many many fine ones as well as amateurs, but I can't imagine anyone giving a better performance nor understanding Scarlett better than Vivien Leigh. Same goes for Olivia de Havilland and Hattie McDaniel. For that matter Gable falls under that blanket as well.

Now Leslie Howard, who didn't want to do it and was both too old and miscast, never did much for me. Selznick wanted Tyrone Power who would have been ideal but Fox wouldn't loan him out.

It's a big commitment of time but the intermission is perfectly placed and for beginners a good place to take a break, digest the first part and then go back and finish.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21463545.post-41794619617283232422019-07-22T13:44:40.686-07:002019-07-22T13:44:40.686-07:00@keith71_98-I'm glad I was able to see it duri...@keith71_98-I'm glad I was able to see it during these difficult times for me personally as well as be able to tell everyone that I finally saw it. Gone with the Wind is so much more, as you say, the photography, story, and music, etc. The turbulent relationship between Rhett Butler and Scarlett is probably my favorite thing about the film.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21463545.post-53222382344674244272019-07-19T18:17:45.297-07:002019-07-19T18:17:45.297-07:00@Ruth-Of the 5 classics pre-1960s? It's actually one of the few films my mom brought home from a trip abroad, so it's one of my earliest intro to Hollywood classics! I actually just listed this as one of my five fave classics on Twitter, I was tagged by a fellow blogger. I'm glad you liked this one as some people didn't care for it. I actually thought the fact that Scarlett is more of an antihero is so refreshing and bold for a film released that era.

Btw, since you're not on Twitter I couldn't tag you. Here's my 5 classics:

- Gone with the Wind (1939)
- Casablanca (1942)
- Brief Encounter (1945)
- Roman Holiday (1953)
- Ben-Hur (1959)

What would YOU pick?
Ruthhttps://flixchatter.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21463545.post-63921151610394281712019-07-18T14:16:22.763-07:002019-07-18T14:16:22.763-07:00@Wendell-She did have her moments and Leigh defini...@Wendell-She did have her moments and Leigh definitely sold it. Maybe I have because I did watch it from time to time, but I definitely don't remember it.Dellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05634519605152190304noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21463545.post-82991691215948545372019-07-17T13:33:19.747-07:002019-07-17T13:33:19.747-07:00@Brittani-I'd suggest to watch it in 2 parts w...@Brittani-I'd suggest to watch it in 2 parts where you stop during the intermission and watch it the next day. I was able to watch most of it on that one day. It surprised the hell out of me as I was able to get into it despite some of the romanticism towards slavery and such.

@Dell-I do like Vivien Leigh but Scarlett was such a bitch. Going after someone who is as interesting as a wet blanket when she finally was with a real man who didn't take shit from her. BTW, have you seen the alternate endings of the film from Mad TV?thevoid99https://www.blogger.com/profile/03055459287396592446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21463545.post-49745791320602928482019-07-17T05:30:22.537-07:002019-07-17T05:30:22.537-07:00The craft on display in this movie is undeniably g...The craft on display in this movie is undeniably great.
