Yeah, people can bitch that it beat Raging Bull for Best Picture but it's still a great film.thevoid99https://www.blogger.com/profile/03055459287396592446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21463545.post-25276412016156843562017-02-07T04:54:33.739-08:002017-02-07T04:54:33.739-08:00This film was so devastating and moving. Donald Sutherland was unfairly overlooked as I just love what he does including the moment where he meets Dr. Berger as it had his character finally opening doors that he didn't realize as well as wonder about what he wore at his son's funeral and why his wife made him wear that shirt? It's these little things in films that make it so great.

@Chris-I agree as it was quite sad because you feel for Sutherland who had done so much for his family and gave them everything and be the one to hold it together. Then he realizes that everything isn't OK and something more has been lost but it's never going to come back. It was devastating to watch as well as Moore's own reaction in the aftermath. thevoid99https://www.blogger.com/profile/03055459287396592446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21463545.post-64001736463259248182017-02-06T08:23:21.469-08:002017-02-06T08:23:21.469-08:00The confrontation between Sutherland and Moore whe...The confrontation between Sutherland and Moore when he says "you're not strong and not really giving" is one of my favorite scenes, ever! That moment is so powerful and well-written. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_SfD5cdrnw).
The way grief was handled in Ordinary People was more interesting to me than what they did in Manchester by the Sea.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21463545.post-41780680941380829452017-02-05T21:47:53.533-08:002017-02-05T21:47:53.533-08:00This is definitely a heavy sometimes suffocating v...This is definitely a heavy sometimes suffocating view but a worthwhile one. Redford strikes the proper observant tone in his direction, watching the interactions mostly from a distance without a lot of fancy tricks.

One of the mysteries of all the accolades the film received is how MTM, Hutton and Hirsch all received nominations and the equally superior Donald Sutherland walked away empty handed. In many ways he's the glue that holds the entire film together. The other three are brilliant and deserved those nods, and Hutton the win, but how could they not have noticed him?

This was a huge success for Mary Tyler Moore and she does remarkably complex work in the film but it almost didn't happen. Redford considered Lee Remick at first who I can easily see doing sensational things with the part and Ann-Margret, who likewise would have been a fantastically interesting choice, signed on but had to withdraw when her husband was stricken with a muscle wasting disease and required intensive care. As wonderful as either woman might have been it wouldn't be the same film without Mary, there's the added touch of reality that she and Timothy Hutton bear a resemblance to each other providing another layer to the picture. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21463545.post-38652203382612985702017-02-05T11:50:18.421-08:002017-02-05T11:50:18.421-08:00@ruth-It's actually a really good film.
