Thursday Movie Picks: It's a Party!
For the 50th week of 2018 as part of Wandering Through the Shelves' Thursday Movie Picks series hosted by Wanderer. We venture into the theme of parties where there’s films that celebrate some form of enjoyment and with 2018 about to end in a few weeks. Why not party as it’s a time to celebrate the good times or something that is to end. Here are my three picks:
1. Animal House
TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!!!! The ultimate college film that is the standard bearer of gross-out, balls-out, politically-incorrect comedies. Snobs vs. slobs. The elitist snobs want to rule the campus and make themselves look good yet the misfit slobs just want to party and create as much chaos as they can. What more could you ask?
2. Bachelor Party
Tom Hanks is about to get married to Tawny Kitaen and his buddies decide to celebrate with a bachelor party. An underrated film from the 1980s is this raunchy yet hilarious comedy where a man is given a great party but is aware that his future in-laws don’t like him very much while the former boyfriend of his fiancée wants him to give her up. It’s a film that never takes itself seriously while it also has a lesson in which Hanks’ future mother-in-law would learn that in some cases. Size does matter.
3. Superbad
It’s the last day of high school as a trio of buddies are trying to supply booze for the upcoming party hosted by Emma Stone in one of her early film appearances. Yet, Jonah Hill and Michael Cera try to get as much booze and such for the party while their friend McLovin’ gets beaten up by a robber and later hangs out with a couple of cops who sees that he’s a cool kid and make him even cooler. It’s a wild film but certainly a whole lot of fun to watch.

Superbad! I've seen Animal House but it's been so long. I used to mix it up with Porky's in my head all the time. I haven't seen The Bachelor, that one is kind of popular this week.
ReplyDeleteHey we match! While Bachelor Party isn't my favorite of my three choices it is better than its reputation would have you believe and Hanks radiates star power even in a goofy comedy.
ReplyDeleteAnimal House is a perfect pick! I saw it in the theatre on its initial release and the crowd went wild for it. I don't remember how or why I convinced my mother and aunt to go with me but they ended up loving it too.
I haven't seen Superbad, my patience with Micheal Cera is nil, but it looks to be the title of the week.
As I said out match isn't my fave of my three, that would be my first, but all three are fun films.
The Reluctant Debutante (1958)-Sheila Broadbent, chic second wife of barrister Jimmy Broadbent (real life marrieds Rex Harrison & Kay Kendall) welcome Jimmy’s teenaged American raised daughter Jane (Sandra Dee) to London just as debutante season is beginning. Though Jane shows zero interest in participating Sheila spurred by competition with her snotty cousin Mabel Claremont (Angela Lansbury), and thinking she’s doing it for Jane’s own good, plunges all of them into the whirl of endless parties and balls each bring out a new teen into society. While Sheila hopes to pair Jane with the insufferable but wealthy David Fenner Jane has her own ideas and falls for the supposedly disreputable young drummer David Parkson (John Saxon). It’s all a fizzy roundelay with Kay Kendall stealing the show as the well-meaning Sheila. Sadly this was her second to last film, she died the next year of leukemia at 33.
Bachelor Party (1984)-The night before his wedding to fiancée Debbie (Tawny Kitaen) Rick (Tom Hanks) reluctantly goes out for a night of debauchery with his friends, ringleader Jay (Adrian Zmed) and depressed, recently divorced Brad (Bradford Bancroft). They run into Debbie's wealthy, disapproving father (George Grizzard) and her ex-boyfriend, Cole (Robert Prescott), who both attempt to stop the wedding. Meanwhile Debbie is taken out by her friends for adventures of their own. Raunchy comedy was a big hit for the fresh from TV Hanks helping put him on the track to superstardom.
Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)-The entire high school graduating class from football stars and cool girls to complete nerds gather at a wealthy classmate's home for a mega party. The artistic Preston (Ethan Embry) hopes to move in on Amanda (Jennifer Love Hewitt), the girl he’s loved from afar for years. Dorky William (Charlie Korsmo) schemes to pay back meathead Mike (Peter Facinelli) for years of bullying, and would-be rapper Kenny (Seth Green) gets locked in a room with snarky Denise (Lauren Ambrose).
All three of these are really fun movies. That scene in the gif for Superbad will forever be stuck in my head.
ReplyDeleteI've only seen Superbad which I watched for Emma Stone and ended up liking it quite a bit. I think it's about time I watch Animal House, I've been meaning to forever!
ReplyDelete@Brittani-If you ever want to see Tom Hanks act like a snob, that is the film to see.
ReplyDelete@joel65913-I never liked Can't Hardly Wait though I was in high school when the film came out. For me, it was a Generation Y film with a bunch of whiny losers with the exception of Lauren Ambrose.
@Wendell-Period blood!
@Sonia-See Animal House. It's one of the greatest comedies.... ever!
