Marc by Sofia

Directed by Sofia Coppola, Marc by Sofia is a documentary film about the life and work of fashion designer Marc Jacobs. The film is Coppola’s first non-fiction feature film where she explores Jacobs’ work and his upbringing as well as their friendship as he is preparing for a major show. Even as he also discusses his love for fashion and its history while also knowing when it is time to break the rules. The result is an intoxicating and rapturous film by Sofia Coppola.

It is early 2024 as fashion designer Marc Jacobs is about to present a new show and he only has 12 weeks to unveil it for the upcoming spring season. The film has director Sofia Coppola follow and interview Jacobs in the span of 12 weeks while he talks about his life and career. Even as he goes into his own history in his family life where he was raised by his grandmother who taught him to sew as she was a woman of high society that also knew what made fashion great. He would study Parsons School of Design where he would work with Perry Ellis from the late 1980s to 1993 where he was fired from Perry Ellis though he claims he was not as it was an amicable split. Coppola and Jacobs met in the early 90s when it was a crucial time for the fashion world with the emergence of the grunge look happening.

Jacobs also talks about his time working for Louis Vuitton from 1997 to 2014 where he admitted there was frustration early on and he lashed out by going to his love of street art to do things for the brand. The film would move back and forth from Jacobs’ rise in the fashion industry and working through his upcoming fashion show in New York City with several collaborators he is fond of. Coppola would often shoot much of the work and interview Jacobs through medium shots while would often put herself in the film to converse with him. The climatic show that featured gigantic folding metal chairs and metal tables to play into a paper doll-like presentation has Coppola using close-ups to show the models putting on their makeup as well as the chaos of last-minute jitters and fixes. With the aid of cinematographers Roman Coppola, Jenna Rosher, and Shane Sigler, Coppola would maintain a naturalism to the work at Jacobs’ studio as well as a stylized look to play into Jacobs’ vision in his big show.

With the aid of editor/co-music supervisor Chad Sipkin, Coppola would incorporate an array of archival footage from many of Jacobs’ shows in the past as well as clips from films, music performances, photographs, and theatrical shows that would inspire Jacobs. Notably the works of Bob Fosse and Rainer Werner Fassbinder where he would talk about their films and how they inspired him visually and the clothes, he would create for his shows. Sound designer Stephen Barden would help maintain that naturalism in the way Jacobs would work in his studio as well as talk to people in a bookstore he owns in New York City. Music supervisors Chad Sipkin and Margaret Yen would cultivate a music soundtrack that includes a diverse collection featuring Warpaint, Cibo Matto, Sonic Youth, Elastica, George Benson, Max Richter, and music from various film clips.

Marc by Sofia is a sensational film by Sofia Coppola. It is a compelling documentary film that explores one of the finest fashion designers of the late 20th/early 21st century as he is also creating another fashion show during an important season. The film is also an exploration into the world of fashion and how a designer must constantly reinvent himself as fashion often changes. In the end, Marc by Sofia is a phenomenal by Sofia Coppola.
