Thursday Movie Picks: Films About Villains
In the 47th week of 2020 for Wandering Through the Shelves' Thursday Movie Picks. We go into the subject of movies about villains. Villains are often more interesting than the heroes themselves where they definitely showcase a whole lot more nuances that no one expects. Here are my three picks:
1. Downfall
Oliver Hirschbiegel’s film about the final days in the life of Adolf Hitler told from the perspective of his former secretary is an unexpected bio-pic of sorts as it showcases one of the most evil men of the 20th Century dealing with failure and the end. Starring Bruno Ganz as Hitler, it is a film that is now more famous for a scene of Hitler just losing it as it’s become this wave of Internet memes that became a life of its own.
2. Revenge of the Sith
The third and the final of the Star Wars prequel film series by George Lucas is definitely the best film of that trilogy despite its flaws. Yet, it is an exploration of a young man’s descent as he becomes frustrated by the Jedi council as well as the expectation that he’s to become a father with Chancellor Palpatine trying to play into his ego. It is a film that play into the final days of the Clone Wars but also an unexpected betrayal in which Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader.
3. Avengers: Infinity War

I am not sure if I saw Downfall but I really want to. Hitler was just evil, like Stalin. Did I ever mention that my mom met Hitler? She was 15 yrs old and had survived the bombing of Hamburg. She was forced into the Hitler Youth and had to go to Hamburg and help if there was a bombing. Anyhoo, he shook every girl's hand including my mom. My mom said, afterwards , that is she had known how evil he was she would have had a hand grenade and blown him up. Anakin turned pretty rotten especially when he killed all the kids. You can't get much worse than that. Thanos is also just evil but believes he is benevolent.
Infinity War is an awesome pick for this, I didn't even think of that.
A good villain is always fun to watch. I am always intrigued as to why someone is like that, the psychology behind it all fascinates me.
It can definitely be fun and devious to see things from the other side - I really liked Unbreakable for that reason.
Thanos is a perfect pick! I'm a bit bummed right now that I didn't think of Avengers: Endgame.
How did I not think of Downfall? Ganz's is such a great performance. Great picks!
I really love Revenge of the Sith and love seeing it on this list. It's a movie that I think people forget about. It's a really strong Star Wars entry, especially that last 30 minutes or so. Big fan of it.
