Thursday Movie Picks: A Dig (Archeology/Paleontology)

For the ninth week of 2022 as part of Wandering Through the Shelves' Thursday Movie Picks. We go into the subject of a dig whether it’s in archeology or paleontology as it is about finding something to explain ourselves. It is a fascinating subject as it play into people wanting to find something and digging their way to find it. Here are my three picks as it all revolve around Indiana Jones:

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones’ first story involves him trying to find an ark unaware that the Nazis are also looking for it where Jones meets his old flame Marion. It’s a film that is filled with a lot of cliffhangers and other hijinks where Dr. Jones deals with a lot of shit but also knows to always bring a gun or a whip if he’s facing someone with a sword. Let’s also not forget about the thing that Jones hates and fears more than anything. Snakes… why did it have to be snakes?

2. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
A prequel of sorts to the previous film as it has Dr. Jones landing in India to retrieve a trio of stones from a poor village as he’s joined by a singer and a young Asian kid as they deal with black magic, a hallway full of insects, strange feasts involving monkey brains, snakes, rituals, and other dark shit. It’s the film that introduced the world to the PG-13 rating as it also has Jones ending child trafficking and other shit.

3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The third film in the original trilogy (with a new film coming next year) has Dr. Jones once again deal with Nazis but he is joined by his father in Henry Jones as well as a couple of old allies. This time, it revolves around the Holy Grail where the Jones, Marcus Brody, and Sallah go on a quest to find the Grail before the Nazis get it. The film also featured a sequence with a young River Phoenix as the young Indy as it play into the origin of his Fedora.

Raiders remains one of my favorite movies of all time as well as one of my favorite all-time movie theater experiences.

Temple of Doom is better than people remember because people tend to remember how annoying Kate Capshaw was in that and forget the fun stuff. It's also a movie that had one of the best-ever video game tie-ins.

Last Crusade is a dandy, and Sean Connery was a perfect addition.

Nice! Got to love a good Indy theme. So glad there's only three movies and definitely not a forth one.

Yes, yes, and yes. How can you possibly go wrong with those choices. Those movies will always be special to me. I'll never forget my experience seeing Raiders in the theaters for the first time. I actually just recently showed these three to our kids. It was a great time.

You went the Indy route which is a great way to go even though I just am not a lover of this series. I’m wondering if Indy will be in a wheelchair for the 4th outing or taking out his false teeth. I really hated the 2nd flick with that annoying kid. The worst one is the 4th with Cat Blanchett as a Natasha fighting Rocky and Bullwinkle. My fav is the 3rd with Sean Connery and the sad knight in that cave.
