Thursday Movie Picks: Over a Meal

For the 47th week of 2019 as part of Wandering Through the Shelves' Thursday Movie Picks. We delve into the subject of over a meal as it relates to dinners and such in a film. It is a moment where characters have a chance to interact with one another and just eat something as it either serves as a break from the action or just to have characters talk with one another. Here are my three picks as they’re all from films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

1. Thor

Upon being casted out of Asgard for destroying a fragile peace between two former enemies, Thor arrives on Earth as he meets a scientist in Jane Foster, her mentor Erik Selvig, and their intern Darcy as he is taken to a diner. It’s a simple scene that showcases Thor eating a lot and taking a sip of coffee and demanding for another. It’s a short scene where Thor is just taking in the delights of what Earth has to offer while learning that his hammer is somewhere nearby as he needs to go get it.

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Having just survived an attack from S.H.I.E.L.D. and learning that Hydra has infiltrated the organization, Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff go on the run and turn to Sam Wilson whom they had met early in the film. Romanoff and Rogers discuss what they just learned and try to figure out what to do next while they eat breakfast with Wilson who would offer his services to help them out as the scene also serves as an introduction for his own superhero name in Falcon.

3. Avengers: Endgame

In the film that is about defeat and loss with its main narrative moving the story five years after the events of the first film, the Avengers learn that one of their allies is alive and well having been stuck in the quantum realm for 5 years (5 hours quantum time) as they turn to Tony Stark for help. Stark refuses at first so they go to another man with a big brain in Bruce Banner/the Hulk who has now become Professor Hulk as he explained what he went through as he converses with Rogers, Romanoff, and Scott Lang at a diner eating breakfast and wanting to share his food with them. Plus, taking a selfie with some kids who are fans of Professor Hulk. Audiences are polarized with what Banner/Hulk has become but it’s the right conclusion for the character to become one person and accept who he is. Plus, Hulk has learned the upside to sharing following his own previous encounter with Lang as Ant-Man.

Awesome picks! I especially loved the Endgame dinner scene! It was nice to see the Hulk just having fun for once in the franchise!

When I saw that you went with Marvel I immediately had to think of the Shawarma-Post-Credit-Scene!

I love your theme! The Thor one is my favorite. I actually thought that scene in Endgame went on for way too long and was too awkward for me. I liked the Schwarma bit in the original Avengers.

Love your theme within a theme! Especially your first pick. You can't go wrong with coffee. And Thor.
